  • Start of philosophy career

    After teaching high school for two years, Dewey pursued the idea of a career in philosophy. He sent a philosophical essay to the editor of the Journal of Speculative Philosophy. The essay was accepted, confirming to Dewey that he should pursue a career in philosophy.
  • Doctorate degree from Johns Hopkins

    While attending Johns Hopkins, Dewey meet two intellects that had a considerable impact on his career. German philosopher George Sylvester Morris taught Dewey to the organic model of nature characteristic of German idealism. American psychologist G. Stanley Hall gave him an appreciation of the power of scientific methodology as applied to the human sciences. These ideas would influence Dewey's early thought, as well as his ideas throughout his whole career.
  • Pragmatism

    Dewey joined the University of Chicago. During his time there, his early ideas changed to a more empirically based theory of knowledge, leading him to develop the American school of thought known as pragmatism.
