    John Davison Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839, in Richford New York. His mother's name was Eliza Rockefeller and his fathers name was William Avery Rockefeller.
  • Early Years

    When he was 14 years old Rockefeller and his family moved to Cleveland Ohio. At the age of 16, Rockefeller got his first real office job as an assistant bookkeeper with Hewitt & Tuttle. Also by the age of 20 Rockefeller decided to go out on his own with a business partner, and he was working as a commission merchant in meat, hay, grain, and other goods. At the end of the company's first year they had earned $450,000.

    In 1863, Rockefeller opened up his first oil refinery. In just two years his oil refinery was the largest in the whole area. After more success was introduced, it did not take Rockefeller long to lead his oil business to full time.

    Rockefeller and his wife, who's name was Laura Spelman Rockefeller had had five children, and that included a daughter named Alice, but unfortunately she had died in infancy. The other Kids Names were John D. Rockefeller Jr., Edith Rockefeller McCormick, Alta Rockefeller Prentice, and Elizabeth Rockefeller Strong.

    In 1870, with the help of his associates, they were able to incorporate the Standard Oil Company. After two years Standard had controlled the majority of oil refineries in the Cleveland area.

    As Standard's footprint got bigger, it had definitely drawn up big competitors in other regions. With Rockefeller overseeing it all, and a decade after Standard Oil was incorporated, it had a near monopoly of the oil business in the United States, and made each division stronger.
  • Antitrust Act

    In 1890 Congress decided to make the Sherman Antitrust Act. Two years later the Ohio Supreme Court considered a monopoly that stood in violation of Ohio law. Since Rockefeller was most likely always eager to be one step ahead, he had allowed each property under the Standard banner to be run by others after he had decided to dissolve the corporation.

    IN 18 92 Rockefeller gave more than $80 million to help pay for and create the University of Chicago.

    The company broke itself to pieces in front of antitrust legislation after nine years. Then, those pieces were put back together in a holding company.

    The United States Supreme Court declared the new existence in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act and declared that it was illegal and then it was soon forced to dissolve.

    John Davison Rockefeller died on May 23, 1937 in Ormond Beach, Florida. He had lived to be 97 years old, and accomplished so much in his lifetime.
