His pearints relationship was exstremly strained his father would leave for months on end, and all this was during the great depression.he was depression all through his childhood and be very shy in school. dispite this he fond salus in movies, comedies that would play in a local theater would set the ground work for his future. when he turned sixteen he became employed, in his words, in "lifting heavy things."

    after the war ended neil got employed in Warner Brothers with his brother, he worked in the mailroom of the New York office and his brother in publicity department. together they colaberated in a amertaur comedic plays, they later prosented them selfs to Goodman Ace a producer from CBS who was looking for comedy wrighters, he chalenged them to make a sketch funny enough to be be brodcast on CBS. They hit home so there set to write for Robert Q. Lewis.
