Prior to coming to the United States, Ying-Ying gained an understanding of Chinese Customs, rituals, and values, which formed a basis of her cultural identity.

    One of the people that An-Mei "encountered" that has influenced her the most was her mother. An-Mei's mother, either though being shunned from her family become she became a concubine to Wu Tsing, taught An-Mei valuable lessons through her actions and ultimate sacrifices. One of the lessons, before coming to the U.S, that she learned is to be able to voice yourself as An-Mei watched her mother struggle with this aspect, ultimately leading to her suicide.

    In Taiyuan, Lindo encountered Huang Taitai, Lindo's mother-in-law who was a dominant figure in her life. With the arranged marriage forced onto Lindo, Huang Taitai's oppressive behavior gave significant challenges to Lindo. This eventually leads up to Lindo learning to be resilient as she learns to use her intelligence to manipulate and escape her loveless marriage.

    Suyuan Woo encountered other Refugees as during this time of warfare, Kweilin was a haven for many Chinese fleeing from Japanese Advance. Prior to coming to the U.S, she had to learn how to be able to making sacrifices and do what you need to do to survive, for example, having the leave her two babies behind as she was too weak to carry on with them.
