Charles James Thomsen enlisted in the Army at Fort Slocum, New York. -
Trench Digging
Some of the trenches during WWI were assisted by machines instead of digging them all by hand. The trench digging machines were not used very much during WWI. -
Massive Bullets
They created huge shells for a railroad gun. THey were originally used with battleships. They were later put the massive guns on armored railcars. Both sides used them during the war. -
Lusitania
A German submarine sunk a British passenger ship with a torpedo when they entered the warzone. It killed nearly 1,200 passengers including 128 Americans. It was declared a terrorist attac k not a legitimate act of war. -
Helmets
During WWI Stahlhelm helmets were created. Heavy steel plates were added in them. The steel plates helped with protection from snipers when you were in the trenches and popped your head above the ground -
Postcard to his mother
Charles sent a postcard to his mother depicting a town. He sent the postcard from a town in France. He sent it to her because he thought it was the prettiest town he had ever seen. -
U.S enters the war
In 1917 the United States entered World War I. They stayed neutral most of the time. Most Americans supported the German side of the war. -
Zimmerman Telegram
In 1917 a German official sent a telegram to Mexico asking them to become allies with Germany. In the telegram it said if they did help them then they would help them get their lost territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona after the war. But it was leaked to America and they now wanted war with Germany -
Aboard the U.S.S Carpathia
Charles Thomsen sent a letter to his mother. When he sent the letter he was on his way back to America. He sent it aboard the U.S.S Carpathia. -
Telephone
In WWI a Field Telephone was created. For the telephone they needed a huge spool so they could go as far as they needed in the field. -
Large Horns
During WWI they created large horns. They used them to amplify sounds. They were also used to find enemy aircraft. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk ended the war between Russia and Germany. In the treaty Russia lost alot of territory. They lost Ukraine, Baltic Territory, Polish Territory, and Finland. Without Russia, Germany focused on the western forces. -
First Lieutenant
Charles was appointed First Lieutenant. He was appointed !st Lieutenant in the Engineers unit in the United States Army. -
Armistice Day
On Armistice day a truce was signed between the countries at war to stop fighting. Armistice day is a national holiday. A couple days before Germany became a Republic and the German Emperor stepped down. -
Honorable Discharge
Charles James Thomsen was honorably discharged. He was discharged from First Lieutenant of Engineers.
