Jefferson learned that Spain and France were going to secretly sell the Louisiana Territory to France. This posed as a big threat so he sent a new minister to France to offer 2 million dollars for the territory. -

In 1802 the Spanish decided to change their policy which caused America to not have American goods come through or beyond New Orleans. -
The Selection
Not so long after the purchase, Thomas Jefferson selected Merriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new purchased land and to map the fabled Northwest Passage. Their journey began on May, 14th 1804. -
Staying Neutral
Jefferson decides to keep the nation neutral to the conflict between Britain and France which causes U.S trade to flourish until 1805. -
The Purchase
Jefferson was hesitant at first deciding with himself if it was legal or not to make such a large territorial purchase. In the end he decided to use congress' treaty making powers and on May 2nd 1803 the treaty was signed to purchase the Louisiana Territory. -
Re-elected
Thomas Jefferson was re-elected for his second term during a peaceful time in the nation. He went against Federalist Charles Cotesworth Pinckney. -
Saint Domingue
France had control over the island Saint Domingue until a revolt took place led by Toussaint L'Ouverture who then after claimed they were a new independent republic and took their new name of Haiti. This caused Napoleon to not push the purchase of the Louisiana Territory. -
The Duel
Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton commenced a duel after Hamilton heard that Burr was trying to take New York out of the Union. Burr shot with Hamilton attempting to and then fled to South Carolina and was never tried for the crime. -
Pike's Expedition
Jefferson sent out a military party to explore the south and west regions of the Louisiana Territory known as "Pike's Expedition" led by Lieutenant Zebulon Pike on July 15th 1806. -
Trouble Brewing
In June of 1807 conflict on the seas occurred between Britain and the U.S, while many Americans were demanding a war, Thomas Jefferson was trying to avoid the war at all costs. -
The Embargo Act
Jefferson had help from congress to pass the Embargo Act in December of 1807 which cut all trade from all nations. -
Jefferson 2nd Term Comes to an End
In 1808, Jefferson decided to follow George Washington's footsteps and not run for a third term, this caused James Madison to become the 4th president of the United States.
