Thomas Jefferson becomes President
Thomas Jefferson was the 3rd President of the US. He was the author of the Declaration of Independence. He was in charge of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 that purchased it from Napoleon for $15 million. He was President from 1801 to 1809. -
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark mapped the first land route across the US. They left from St. Louis, Missouri and headed to the Pacific Ocean. They were asked to explore unknown land and trade with the Indians. It took them 2 years, 4 months, and 2 days. -
War of 1812
War of 1812 lasted from 1812 to 1815 between the US and Britain. It ended with the Treaty of Ghent in a tie. Native Americans did not get their land back. -
James Monroe
James Monroe was the 5th President from 1817 to 1825. He was an Officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. He signed the Florida Purchase Treaty. He was a leader during the Treaty of 1818 for the US and the United Kingdom to end their land argument. He made the Monroe Doctrine. -
Missouri Compromise
At this time, there was an even number of slave states and free states. To keep the number even, Missouri became a slave state and Maine became a free state. An imaginary line was formed dividing the US in two. The Northern States were free states and the Southern States were slave states. This remained law until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. -
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was the 7th President from 1829 to 1837. He was a lawyer and a landowner. He was a national war hero during the Battle of New Orleans. He started the Trail of Tears that pushed Native Americans to move west. He paid off the national debt. -
Nat Turner Rebellion
Nat Turner was a slave preacher who led a slave uprising with 80 people. It lasted one day in Virginia. Militia ended up hanging him. Afterwards, Virginia made harder slave laws. -
John Tyler
John Tyler was the first to become President after the death of a President. He was the 10th President from 1841 to 1845. He was the Governor of Virginia. He was the President with the most kids. He had 15 kids through two marriages. In 1844, he signed the Treaty of Wanghia with China that gave the US access to Asian ports. -
James K. Polk
James K. Polk was the 11th President from 1845 to 1849. He was a leader during the Mexican-Indian War. He was the Governor of Tennessee who became the youngest President to take office. He met all four of his goals he set for his Presidency. He reduced tariffs that increased trade. He maintained an Independent Treasury System. The US gained Oregon, California, New Mexico, and Texas. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was signed by Congress. All runaway slaves must be caught and returned to their Masters. Anyone who helped a slave would be put in jail for six months and fined $1,000. Harriet Tubman becomes a leader in the Underground Railroad to help escaped slaves.
