An imaginary line was formed dividing the US in two. The Northern States were free states and the Southern States were slave states. This remained law until the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854.

He met all four of his goals he set for his Presidency. He reduced tariffs that increased trade. He maintained an Independent Treasury System. The US gained Oregon, California, New Mexico, and Texas.

    The Fugitive Slave Act was signed by Congress. All runaway slaves must be caught and returned to their Masters. Anyone who helped a slave would be put in jail for six months and fined $1,000. Harriet Tubman becomes a leader in the Underground Railroad to help escaped slaves.
