    Battle of Midway
    This battle was fought near the Pacific island of Midway. It was considered one of the major pacific wars. The U.S. and Japan were the major players in this battle. Japan had been on the offensive before this battle. Because of the communication technology, the U.S. was able to surprise Japan and get the win for this battle. The Battle of Midway was important because it allowed the Allies to take the offensive in the Pacific.

    This battle was the ordered attack on the Russian city of Stalingrad by Hitler. Stalin later sent his Russian troops to fight the Germans. The battle was a bloody struggle and took until February for the battle to be won by the Russians. Stalingrad was an important win for the Russians because if they city were to have been taken, they would have lost a major communication center and the Volga River.

    Second Battle of El Alamein
    The Second battle of El Alamein was the second battle fought in the vast desert near that Egyptian city. The Allies that fought were Britain, Australia, South Africa, India, and France. The Axis Powers of the battle consisted of Germany and Italy. The major tools of this battle were tanks. These tanks lead to the victory of the Allies. This battle was important because it lead to the German surrender of North Africa.

    D-Day was the Allied invasion on the coast of Normandy, a part of northern France which the Nazis had captured. Canada, Britain, and the U.S. fought this battle against the Germans. This battle lasted from June to August, and was the largest seaborn invasion in history. The Allies came out with the victory. D-day was important because it freed France from Germany. It is also sometimes considered to have been the beginning of the end of war in Europe.

    The Battle of the Bulge was fought in the Ardennes in Belgium. German forces had caused U.S. troops to create a "bulge" in their line. By the end of January, the U.S. took the victory. This battle was important because it dealt a major blow to the German army. the Lufftwaffe suffered major losses and the German army reserves were expended.

    The Battle of Iwo Jima
    This battle was fought in the Pacific on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The U.S. and Japan fought in this battle. The Japanese were heavily fortified and used Kamikaze tactics, but the naval and ground support of the U.S. led to their win. The iconic flag raising on Mount Surabachi occured after the war was won by the United States. Iwo Jima was important because because Japan lost major airfields that were on the island.

    The Battle of Okinawa
    Okinawa was the longest and largest of the Pacific battles. It involved the U.S. and Japan. Japan had to change their typical air tactics to Kamazi or suicide missions that made this battle one of the more difficult Pacific battles for the Allies. The Allies did eventually win, though. This battle was important because it gave the U.S. a base at which to opperate the invasion of Japan.
