Stuart visits Washington, D.C. to seek a patent for an invention. He is asked to take a message to Lt. Colonel Robert E. Lee, his former West Point superintendent. He joins Lee and participates in the capture of John Brown at Harper’s Ferry. -
Becomes lieutenant colonel
Stuart is commissioned a lieutenant colonel of infantry in the Confederate Army. -
The 15th Regiment Alabama Infantry is Organized
The 15th Alabama was a Confederate volunteer infantry. It fought mainly with the army of Robert E. Lee and the army of Northern Virginia. Organized in the summer of 1851 at Fort Mitchell. The battle of Gettysburg is what the regiment is best known for. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The 15th Alabama is most famous for being the regiment that confronted the 20th Maine on Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. Despite several ferocious assaults, the 15th Alabama was ultimately unable to dislodge the Union troops, and eventually retreated in the face of a bayonet charge led by the 20th Maine's commander, Col.
