World War II officially started on September first nineteen thirty nine. What really kicked off the war was Germany's invasion of Poland. On September first nineteen thirty nine, German troops marched and flew into Poland hoping to conquer it. They took out railroads and communication lines, this was a strategy called blitzkrieg. The blitzkrieg strategy was to take out communication and quickly move in. German troops took the city of Warsaw Poland and established a base.

France was doing very bad after WWI. They had suffered the most, as most of WWI was fought on their land. They were rebuilding and trying to recover after the horrible Great War. They were defenseless and vulnerable. Germany decided to take over France. They marched in, and had little resistance. France knew if they fought it would be a massacre. So they surrendered and signed a declaration of peace with Germany.

Although Germany had an alliance with Russia, Hitler was very power hungry. On June twenty second nineteen forty one, Germany broke the alliance and invaded Russia. Within the first month German forces went pretty deep into Russian territory and set up bases. They were very confident that they would win. However like Napolean Boneapart, Hitler severely underestimated the Russians. Germany continued on to the town of Stalingard, where there they suffered a girzzly defeat. The tables got turned.

The war changed for the good on December seventh nineteen forty one. Japan launched hundreds of bomber planes against the U.S. The U.S was completely unaware they were in for a slaughter. Due to some bad call, all ships on the islands of Hawaii were placed in Pearl Harbor. The Japanese bombed hundreds of planes and ships. Destroying hundreds of ships and planes in the U.S Navy. The next day, the U.S declared war on Japan, throwing the U.S into WW II

On this date, fifteen high ranking Nazi officials met at a villa in the Berlin suburbs of Wannsee. They were gathering to discuss what they called, " The final solution to the Jewish question." Most people had already known about the mass murder of the Jewish people. Basically they discussed what they were going to do with the Jews. They decided they would send them to forced labor camps, otherwise known as concentration camps. Millions of Jewish people were sent to concentration camps.

Six months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the U.S was involved in a large nava battle with Japan. The U.S had became very good at intercepting and cracking codes. The U.S intercepted and cracked a code from Japan. The U.S was able to counter Japan's ambush plan and keep them from doing what they intended to do. This battle was a turning point in the war.

On July twenty forth, Britain began a series of air raids on Germany. They attacked at night, bombing the city of Hamburg. This was Britain's retaliation to the air raids on them by Germany. Britain suffered one hundred sixty seven civillian casualities as a result of Germany's air raids. The bombings lasted for eight days, destroying many buildings and killing many citizens.

British troops landed on the coast of Italy. Italy had secretly agreed to the Allied Powers terms of surrender. So British troops simply marched into Italy and took it. Many lives were saved by Italy's surrender. This led to a better foothold in Europe.

On June sixth, nineteen forty four, over one hundred sixty thousand Allied troops landed on a fifty mile stretch of beach in France. Thousands of boats and planes went to the beach at Normandy. The Allied powers got a real foothold of territory in Europe. Though the cost was great, more than nine thousand troops of the Allied powers lost their lives. It was an awful but very vital battle.

On this date Hitler attempted to split the Allied armies in northwest Europe. He tried this using the blitzkreig strategy. American and other units fought desperatley to fend of German forces. As the Germans blazed a path through the Ardennes, the Allied line to the shape of a large bulge. Eventually and through many casualties, the Allied line stopped the Germans from securing bridgeheads that were vital to them.

This was an amphibious invasion of Japan by the U.S. There were over twenty three thousand Japanese soliders both from Army and Navy defending the island. They had the upper hand because they had been there and were fighting from elaborate cave and dugout systems. The island was an ideal location for a U.S base. Many people died during this battle.

This was one of the largest and last battles in the Pacific. There were more than two hundred and eighty seven thousand U.S troops involved and one hundred thirty thousand Japanese troops. There were some vital things at stake. The most important was the air bases which were vital to the invasion of Japan. Japan had lost more than half of their troops in the battle. The U.S suffered casualties but not as bad as Japan.

This was a day for true rejoicing. Germany had surrendered! All across the world, people were extremely happy. The war had been hard on most countries so most were glad when it ended. Many POWs were released and some people in labor camps. After the fighting in Czechoslovokia was over, some German troops tried to flee west but were caught by the Soviets. The U.S.S.R was greatly relieved.

For years the Jewish people had been very badly mistreated. To say they were mistreated is a very large youphamism. They were killed sometimes brutally. The ones that were alive were housed in awful places. They were as skinny as skeletons because of the despicable treatment. Luckily, soon after VE Day most of the Nazi concentration camps were liberated.

This was a very sad day for the Japanese. It was after the Germans had surrendered, the Japanese still wouldn't surrender. The U.S had been working on an atomic bomb when Germans had started. Eventually through much hard work, they proved atomic fission was possible. The project was then used to make extremely powerful bombs. They had tested one, " the Gadget" in southern New Mexico. The U.S sent in two planes to drop the atomic bombs on two Japanese cities : Nagasaki and Hiroshima.

After the dropping of the atomic bombs, Japan had no other choice. On August fifteenth, nineteen forty five Japan surrendered and WWII was officially over. After the complete destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan had to give up. There was much rejoicing, mainly in Europe but also in many other countries like the U.S. The U.S had suffered the least out of most countries. WWII was a awful war that caused millions to lose their lives.
