    Spectacular celebrations were seen all around the world. The first babies of the new millennium were born in New Zealand. Although the year 2000 also sparked Y2K concerns, there were no major computer meltdowns.

    The earthquake in Gujarat killed more than 20,000 people and injured another 167,000. Over 400,000 homes were also destroyed. The quake was felt throughout northern India and parts of Pakistan.

    The Euro was first introduced to the world in 1999, and Euro coins and banknotes entered circulation on 1 January 2002. It became the second largest reserve currency and the second most circulated currency in the world (the first was US dollar).

    China successfully launched "Shenzhou 5" into orbit. The spacecraft was launched from the Gobi Desert carrying one astronaut. The re-entry component returned after orbiting the Earth 14 times. China became the third country in the world to send humans into space.

    Asia's tallest building
    Taipei 101 overtook the Petronas Towers in Malaysia to become the tallest building in the world (until 2010). It was the first skyscraper to break the half-kilometer mark, measuring 509m to the tip of its spire. The structure houses 101 floors above ground and 5 floors below.

    The bombings were a series of coordinated suicide attacks on London's public transport system during the morning rush hour. They were carried out by four British Muslim men. At 8:50am, three bombs exploded on three underground trains with a fourth exploding an hour later on a double-decker bus. The bombings killed 56 people including the bombers and injured 700.

    Pluto becomes a dwarf planet
    Pluto was one of the 9 planets in our Solar System, but it was demoted to a dwarf planet in 2006 by the International Astronomical Union. The other 8 planets are classical planets that have no other objects in their orbits while Pluto has objects from the Kuiper Belt in its orbital path.

    The iPhone is a smartphone designed by Apple. It also functions as a camera phone with text messaging and visual voicemail, a video iPod, and Internet client using a multi-touch screen. Time magazine named it the Invention of the Year.

    Sichuan's 8.0 earthquake
    The deadly earthquake measured a magnitude of 8.0 and killed an estimated 69,000 people. The disaster also left as many as 11 million people homeless. Many of the collapsed buildings were schools, killing thousands of children and teachers. Due to China's one-child policy, many parents lost their only child.

    Michael Jackson dies after suffering cardiac arrest at his mansion in Los Angeles. His amazing music videos in the 1980's broke down racial barriers, and his unique dance moves like robot and moonwalk have become classics. His death triggered grief around the world, and his memorial service was one of the most watched events in history.

    Tallest man-made building in history
    With 160 floors, rising to a height of 829m, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest structure ever built by man, and cost a total of US$1.5 billion. The skyscraper has returned the location of the world's tallest structure to the Middle East, where the Great Pyramid of Giza claimed this title for almost four millennia.

    Japan's 9.0 earthquake and tsunami
    A 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami hit the east of Japan, killing over 15,000 and leaving 9,000 missing. The tsunami also caused a series of nuclear incidents, including a level 7 event and 20 km evacuation zone around the Fukushima I Plant. This became the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.
  • QE II Diamond Jubilee

    QE II Diamond Jubilee
    This day marked the 60th anniversary of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the thrones of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Many celebrations were held to mark this special occasion. Queen Victoria (in 1897) is the only other monarch in their histories to have celebrated a Diamond Jubilee.
