In his first season as the Penguins captain after Mario Lemieux's retirement due to Hodgkin's Lymphoma and the departure of Ron Francis to the Carolina Hurricanes, jagr scores 102 points in 77 games landing him as the Art Ross winner that season. -

With the return of Lemieux the Penguins had a lot of salary in their hands which forced them to trade Jagr to the Washington Capitals in exchange for Kriss Beech, Michal Sivek, and Ross Lupashuck. -
