  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    The civil rights act of 1866 was created by the radical republicans to get back at the southern states. By passing the law it enabled the federal government's invovlement in state affairs that protected the rights of African Americans. Plus it said that African Americans were now legal citizens of the U.S.. President Johnson attempted to veto both bills but he failed.

    Black Codes
    Southern States passed laws to control freed African Americans. Stated in these laws were articles that made it easy for white people to take advantage of African Americans. To retaliate, Congress gave more power to the Freedman's Bureau.
  • Reconstruction Acts (First and Second)

    Reconstruction Acts (First and Second)
    The first Reconstruction Act said that all the states that had not ratified the 14th Admendment must make a new government. The second Reconstruction Act let the army register voters. Many white males did not participate in the new votes. By 1870 all states had rejoined the Union.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    In fear of having the Civil Rights Act overturned, Congress proposed the making of the 14th Admendment. The 14th Admendment stated that citizenship could not be taken away from African Americans and every adult male in a state could vote whether they were white or African American. Also thanks to the 14th Admendment, Africans American were tried equally in the court of law.
  • 15th Admendment

    15th Admendment
    After the Reconstruction Period Ulysses S. Grant was elected president. With Grant in charge Congress made another reajustment to the constitution. They created the 15th Admendment. The 15th Admendment stated that the states couldnt deny any voters based on "race, color, or previous condition of servitude."
