This was a city modeled after the Chinese capital.Buddist monasteries were built throught out the city. They held much political influence, in order to protect the emperor and the central government's position they moved the capital in 784 to Nagaoka. -

Fujiwara Michinaga becomes regent
The Fujiwara family controlled the political scene. They accomplished this by intermarrying with the imperial family. They also occupied all the political positions, the peak of the power of this clan was Fujiwara Michinaga becoming regent. After this the Fujiwara family slowly lost power. -

A legal code is promulgated
The legal code, Joei Shikimoku, was promulgated. It stressed the significance of the loyalty of a master. It was also there to stop a downward spiral of morals and discipline. With this code publicizied any signs of rebellion were crushed almost instantly. -

Onin war
1467-77, The Onin war was a war between feudal lords. They held power and control over many parts of Japan. Families would join sides in the war in hopes of getting more land and power for themselves in the end. -
The sword hunt
To bring the country under absolute control Toyotomi Hideyoshi, a general for the Nobunaga, took all weapons owned by farmers and religious institutions. He also prohibited Samurai from becoming farmers and forced them to live in castle towns. -
Meiji constitution
Meiji Constitution placed most of the power in Japan in the hands of the emperor and those appointed by the emperor. It also placed limits on the power of the House of Representatives. It made Japan a democratic country and opened it up to the world. -
Sino-Japanese war
1894-1895. This war was between Japan and China. The reason being they both wanted Korea. For its coal and iron but China did not want the two trading. Thus beginning the blood shed. -
Russo- Japanese war
1904–05, A military conflict forcing Russia to abandon its expansionist policy in the Far East. It was the first time an Asia power won over a European power. -
Japan in World War 1
Japan joins with the allied powers. They fought German forces in East Asia. Also Japan's idea of a 'Racial Equality Clause' was rejected at the Paris Peace Conference. -
Second Sino war
A small accident made this war grow into what it was. Japan sieged the coast of China and committed acts upon its population. The war continued until 1945. -
Pacific war
Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and several other locations owned by Allied Powers. Through these attacks Japan began to gain more land. It was short lived. The US dropped two atomic bombs on Japan and soon after the Soviet Union came into the war. Forcing Japan to surrender in 1945 -
New constitution
Replaced the Meiji constitution. It stripped the emperor of all power. Laws were now passed by parliament. They were also no longer allowed to lead wars or have any type of army. -
Great east japan earthquake
It was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded. Causing forty meter high tsunami waves. The tsunami created a nuclear accident that forced people to evacuate. -
Buddhism introduced
Buddhism was introduced to Japan around the time span of 538-552. The religion originated in India and spreading across Asia, it reached Japan last. At first Buddhism was rejected but when the emperor fell ill his son prayed. When the emperor's sickness left him he was converted.
