Meiji Period
In this time Japan expanded at an incredible rate. National pride rose at an alarming rate and Japan sought to expand throughout Asia in order to accomodate it's large population. This rapid expansion established themselves as a world power and created a greeat sense of nationalism amoung many of its citizens. -
Japan Defeats the Chinese
The much smaller Japanese army defeated the larger Chinese army. China had to pay Japan, Japan was givern Korea and Taiwan. Japan was now recognized as a rising power and led to increased power of the Japanese military. -

Russo-Japanese War
A victory over Russia was the first by an Asain country over a European one. This war affirmed Japan as a world power. As well, it solidified Japans control over Korea and Manchuria. Japan was also given Sakhalin Island, Russia. The Russians did not hae to pay the qwar cost for Japan which briefly sparked protest in Tokyo, this showed Japans ultranationalism as they were not only happy with a war victory but they also needed more as they believed they were superior to Russia. -

New Government in Japan
In 1928 a new government came into power. Vice-minister of Foreign Affairs Kaku Mori who had stong ties with Ultranationalist societies began to influence the country. Thought of invading China and Manchuria were considered to increase the size of Japan's empire. -
Stock Market Crash
The Stock Market crash led to increased tariffs on good. This led to less trade between counties, this affected Japan greatly, as they relied heavily on goods that they recieved. Jpan needed more raw-materials so they had to look to expand. Which led to their increaase in militarism and conflict with other nations. -

Japan Invades Manchuria
Japan small land mass could not accomodate it's fast growing population. Manchuria was the best option to solve their problems, after investing large ammounts of money Japan controled the South Manchuria railway and kept a military presence in the south Manchuria.LAter Japan invaded the rest of Manchuria and took control. Japan was given no punishment from the League of Nations. This lack of punishment would lead them to invade countries in later years. -

Japan Invades China
Parts of China were seen as an essential part of Japanese existance. They invaded China and were met with little resistance. After this invasion the real power of Japan was no in the hands of the military. -

Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere
This was used to justify Japan's expansion throughout Asia. This was attempt to free all Asain land masses from Western Colinization. It would allign Asain countries with Japan and further expand its empire. Japan believed they were superior to the Western Countries and wanted to take their colonies.
