Rise of the Geishas
The geishas surface around the year 1650 originally as men but later on as a trend in women. Geishas started out as entertainers and licensed to please men in sexual favors. -
First Female Geisha
Later in the 1750 the first female geisha arose named Kikuya. -
Kogal
The trend Kogal surfaced. Kogal was a trende in which girl would wear school outfits with generally shorter skirt, dyed hair and often a scarf. -
During War Attire
People mainly wore kimonos with different colors and patterns depending on their social class, age or gender. During these time people also wore war attire since WWII was taking place. -
Bosozoku
The fashion trend bozoku started where the Japanese youth would ride customized motorcycles. This was often illegal since Japanese people are very keen on keeping order and peace and the bosozoku trend was the opposite. -
Economic Bang
Japan had a big economic growth and personal consumption rating. The Japanese started wearing things more out there instead of wearing subtle clothing like kimonos. -
Lolita
Lolita fashion came to be described to be as the bad girl gone good fashion. This trend started out in the UK and later moved on to Japan. Lolita has different styles ranging from gothic to sweet. -
Gyaru
The style Gyaru emerged. Gyaru is a lot like Ganguro but the difference is that this was not made to challenge the stereotype of Japan. Gyaru mainly focuses on beauty and looking as beautiful as possible with manmade products. -
Ganguro
Ganguro was a trend started to disrupt Japanese tradition. In Japan people are expected to follow a simple appearance code: pale skin, neatness and black hair, Ganguro disrupted this. It was invented by the rebel youth of Japan. Ganguro depicts teenagers with dark skin, colorful hair and outrageous accessories. -
Harujuku/Decora
In Harajuku a trend was being started called Decora. This trend is basically putting on as many accessories as possible while remaining to look cute. This is the current most popular street fashion in japan.
