Recession Recovery
The post WWII recession caused Japan's cotton industry along with many others to be be cut by two thirds. However, in 1960 Japan's production was able to increase by 350%. This is due to the focus of production of raw materials. Japan's government also supported the use of female labor, which created even more production. The textile industry controlled 24% of the production industry.

Income Doubling Plan
In 1960, Prime Minister Hayato Ikeda challenged Japan to double its income in the next decade. Under the Income Doubling Plan consumption was boosted by cutting taxes, bolstering welfare, raising farm prices and reducing income equality. This created a period of growth that lasted until the oil crisis of 1973.

Post War Politics
Post war Japan was dominated by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). Going against the Japanese parliament, left-winged citizens wanted Japan to be an economic superpower and regain its military strength. Under the protection of the United States, the LDP was able to thrive by promoting "growth, growth, growth".

Intro
Following the surrender in 1945 which ended WWII, Japan was left with a disarmed, crumbling empire. American culture then began to intertwine with Japan's. The formation of a democratic government, as well as the development of electronic manufacturing would provide support for the reconstruction soon to come. -

Revision of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security
Following World War II, Japan's relations with former ally Germany were shifted. The revisions of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security established a military alliance between the United States and Japan. -
Treaty on Basic Relations between Japan and the Republic of Korea
This treaty created "normal" diplomatic relations between the neighboring countries. The settlement of problems regarding property, claims, and economic cooperation were also signed. A total of $800 million as "economic cooperation" was paid to Japan by Korea. -
Rebuilding
The mid-1960s revealed a new type of industrial development as the economy opened itself to international competition. The manufacturing of automobiles, electronics, ships, and machine tools gained new importance. The value added to manufacturing and mining grew 17% per year between 1965 and 1970. -
Japanese Student Movement
In protest of the Vietnam War, students created barricades across over 300 universities and high schools throughout Japan. In an attempt to prevent the Prime Minister’s visit to South Vietnam, anti-ANPO students battled the riot police for 10 hours outside of Haneda International Airport. Many of these protests lasted until the 1970's.

Normalization of Relations
In 1972, the People's Republic of China normalized its relations with 15 countries including Japan. This added them to the four-point consensus recently agreed between the Shinzo Abe and Xi Jinping administrations.This was seen as outlining the basic provisions for diplomatic ties between China and Japan. -
Oil Crisis
Due to the conflicts between the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries and Israel, exports of oil to Japan along with many other countries were cut off. By March 1974, oil prices had increased by 400%.
