    The Edo period was the last period of traditional Japan. This was a time of peace, political stability and economic growth under the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu

    Westernization
    During the Meiji Period, Japanese had a phase where they wanted to westernize their country. They borrowed ideas from the US, and the emperors dressed western too, just so they could encourage it for the citizens. They also borrowed ideas from China, but ensured that they wouldn't become another China.
  • Expulsion Law

    Expulsion Law
    the expulsion law stated that all christian missionaries had to leave the country and weren't allowed back in. It also said that all foreign objects were gone and all science books were forbidden. Plus, if any Japanese person left the country, they weren't allowed to re-enter. All ships that were big enough for a long journey were destroyed and no ships were allowed to be built.

    Rise of the Emperor
    When the social hierarchy fell, everyone was looking for someone to blame, everyone blamed the shogun, because he was the one in charge. He ended up losing a lot of power, and the Emperor gained lots of power and respect from all the citizens.
  • Unequal Treaties

    Unequal Treaties
    Japan wanted to trade with other countries, mostly US, because they were worried that if they didn't, they would be a war target. It was a treaty made secretly with the pope in 1994, and the Japanese thought it was unfair because they didn't get a say.
