Birth
Addams was born in Cedarville, Illinois, as the eighth of nine children. -
Education
Addams graduated from Rockford Female Seminary as the valedictorian of her class. She was granted the bachelor's only after the school became accredited in 1882 -
Europe 1
1882-1886 ... Addams pursued medical school, but dropped out because of poor health and a nervous breakdown. She had an operation to straighten her spine. She then spent the next two years traveling Europe with friends and thinking about her future. -

Addams and Ellen Starr took a second trip to Europe to visit Toynbee Hall. -
Hull House 1
Addams and Starr move into the what would soon be the “Hull House.” Their purpose being “to provide a center for a higher civic and social life; to institute and maintain educational and philanthropic enterprises and to investigate and improve the conditions in the industrial districts of Chicago.” -
Hull House 2
Hull House was host to two thousand people every week. Offering kindergarten classes in the morning, club meetings for older children in the afternoon, and clubs for adults in the evening. -
Book
Published her book “The Spirit of Youth and the City Streets” about how “programs are needed because cities are destroying the spirit of youth -
Honorary Degree
Addams received the first honorary degree ever awarded to a woman by Yale University with a master of arts. -
Nobel Peace Prize
Addams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, the same day she was being admitted to a Baltimore hospital due to complications caused by heart attack she had in 1926. -
Death
Addams died in Chicago, Illinois, after an operation revealed unsuspected cancer.
