Gosling is Born
James Arthur Gosling was born on May 19th, 1955. He was born and grew up in Calgary, Canada. -
Education
In May of 1977, Gosling graduated from the University of Calgary with a degree in Computer Science. -
Ph.D and Gosling Emacs
He got his Ph.D in 1983 from Carnegie Mellon University. During his studies at Carnegie Mellon University, Gosling started working on his first projects. He wrote a version of emacs that is known as gosling emacs. He also created a number of mail systems and compilers. Gosling emacs was programmed to solve the "string to string correction problem" that emacs had. This program was eventually sold. -
Sun Microsystems
In October of 1984, Gosling started working for Sun Microsystems. This company sold computers, software, and components. Gosling created the Java language program under Sun Microsystems. The company was later bought out by Oracle. -
Start of Java
Gosling begins to design Java in 1990. -
Java is Created
In 1984, Gosling designed and developed the Java program. This became the foundation of the web. Java is a "commonly used foundation for developing and delivering content on the web. This was Gosling's most successful creation and is essentially what made him famous in the hacker world. -
Officer of the Order of Cananda
Vice President of Sun Microsystems at the time, Gosling receives the Officer of the Order of Canada. A noble award given by the Governor General and it only has 29 recipients. -
Oracle
In 2010, Sun Microsystems was bought out by Oracle. Many changes were made after the change in ownership and James was not pleased with it. He recieved pay cuts and a change in postion. In April of 2010, Gosling left Oracle shortly after they bought Sun Microsystems. -
Google
After leaving Oracle, Gosling was hired by Google in March of 2011. Google "slimed" Sun Microsystems over a code controversy according to Gosling. The way that Google used the Java coding for Android was illegal according to Gosling. He left Google shortly after getting hired. -
Liquid Robotics
After working with Google for 5 months, Gosling left for a start up company called Liquid Robotics. Liquid Robotics were making robots that explored the bottom of the ocean. These robots were to roam the ocean and collect data, James took an immediate interest to this. He became their cheif software architect. -
Google VS Oracle
Google allegedly copied Oracle's coding and was taken to court. This is relevant to James Gosling due to it being his code that was copied. He was not working with Oracle at the time but was still very outspoken about the whole ordeal. Although Google was found not guilty due to lack of patents on the coding, Gosling still sides with Oracle and said "Google totally slimed Sun." -
Typesafe Inc. and Scala Program
After helping Liquid Robotics with software programming, Gosling became an advisor for Typsafe Inc. James believes that the Scala program under Typesafe will become and replace his creation of Java.
