Sputnik 1
The launching of Sputnik I was by the Soviet Union. It began when the U.S and the Soviet Union started conpeting against each other by sending out satellites. It was the first satellite that was put into the Earth's orbit. It could complete one orbit in 96.2 seconds, and trvel 18,000 miles per hour. The satellite also helped with the research that the scientists needed about the atmosphere. -
NASA Formed
The NASA was formed by the U.S during the spac race. They wanted more aeronautics and aerospace research. It controls all missions and launches to space. -
Discoverer XIV Launched
The Discoverer 14 was the first satellite that would go into space as a space craft and then while orbit it would reattach itself. This satellite was uilt by the Unites States of America. -
First Man In Space
Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. The man was russian. He went out there in the Vostok 1 space craft. He became a soviet hero and helped get the russians ahead of the U.S in the Space Race. -
First Woman In Space
Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova was a Soviet astronaut and was the first woman in space. She was on the Vostok 5 mission which orbited around earth 48 times. The flight lasted 70 hours and 40 minutes. She was chosen to fly the spacecraft out of 400 other applicants. -
First Spacewalk
Alexey Leonov was the first man out in actual space. This russian mission done on Voskhod 2. He was outside the spacecraft for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. His space suit bcame inflated when he was trying to get back into the spacecraft. He was able to let some air out but barely make it back. -
Soyuz 1
Soyuz 1 was the first of the Soyuz series. It was sent into space by the U.S and Vladimir Komarov was riding it. On it's ride back there were some technical issues and Vladimir was killed and Soyuz 1 crashed. It was the first terrible space flight. -
Apollo 8
Apollo 8 was the first space craft witha crew onboard it to orbit the moon. There were three men in it, Frank Borman, James Lovell, and William Anders. The mission took three days and also took 10 orbits in 20 hours. On Christmas Eve the crew read the first 10 verses of Genisis while broadcasting the view on television. -
First Landing On Venus
The Soviet Venera 7 was the first probe to land on Venus.The team of people sent a few pictures of the surface back before dieing of too much heat and pressure. -
Apollo 17's Return from the Moon
Apollo 17 was the most recent moon landing by the United States. The crew were Eugene Cernan, Ronald Evans, and Harrison Schmitt. The mission took about 12 days and no one has returned to the moon since.
