The election of 1824 is important to American history because though Jackson had the most votes, 99, it wasn't enough vote because the total number of electoral votes available at that time was 261, therefore he needed 131 more to win. Since no candidate had receive a majority of electoral votes, it was back to the House of Representatives. Clay decided to pull out of the race to allow his voters to vote for Jackson. -
