    In the summer of 1946 a group of civil rights activists protested outside the White House.
  • President Truman creates Committee on Civil Rights

    In December 1946 President Truman responded to the pressure. He created the Committee on Civil Rights.
  • Heman Sweatt applies to a white school

    On december 11, 1946 an African american named Heman Sweatt applied to the law at the University of texas, which did not accept black students.
  • Ending segregation in the military

    In July of 1948 President Truman ended segregation in the military.
  • Supreme Court admits Sweatt

    On June 5, 1950 the supreme court said that the university of texas had to let Sweatt in.
  • Supreme Court outlaws segregation in public schools

    In May 1954 the supreme court ruled in the brown case that segregation in public schools was illegal.
  • Supreme Court desegregates schools

    In 1955 the Supreme Court desegregates public schools "with all deliberate speed"
  • Rosa Parks

    African American seamstress Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passanger. She was quickly arrested.

    In November 1956 the Supreme Court ruled that Montgomery's segregated bus system was illegal.

    Daisy Bates, the president of Arkansas NAACP, arranged rides to the high school for the students on September 4.

    The school board selected nine outstanding African Americans to attend Central High School.
  • Ernest Green

    In May 1958 Ernest Green became the first African American student to graduate from Cntral High School.
