Traveling
This website tells about how most civil war soldiers got around during the civil war. W.H. hall left monroe to travel to janesville where they stayed 4 hours untill they left to clinton junction. Once they got there they went east on the express train and stopped at each station to get to the Suburbs of Racine at dark. Picture-Troops being transported on a train. -
First day at camp.
This website tells you about life in most camps.When W.H. Ball and other troops entered camp they recieved lound cheers from the others in the camp. later on some of the squads were playing Seven Up. They all stayed up late tell about 12 or 1 playing games or talking. -
Majors and Lieutenant
Here is how the army in the civil war was organized and the different ranks in the civil war.At camp Utley in Rancine Wisconsin W.H. Ball gets orders that 10 batteries will get ready to roll out and that 5 majors will be elected from 10 batteries. W.H. Ball and others think that a new luietenant will also be picked. -
Batteries Chosen
This website tells you about what batteries are.W.H. Ball got orders that 5 Batteries will be chosen to move out and will get paid. They will be equipted by the first of next week. Little did they know that they would get paid in about a month. -

Although they ate in the messhall the soldiers (as told in the link) had to cook their own food.W.H. Ball enjoys pie ad tells us how he doesn't know how 1100 dine together at 10 long tables. He also tells of the food that other soldiers familys sent for the soldiers. -

Here is a website that tells you a little about the cannons of the Civil War.W.H. Ball and his company go 4 miles from the camp to practice firing their new Cannons.Although they practiced with the new they did have other types of cannons. -
Boys refusing
This link tells you about the discipline at camps and who could give out punishments.W.H. Ball writes to Sib and Smith that some boys decided to not take a guard shift even though they are picked to. He says he does not know their fates. Punishment can be bad or maybe it can help pass time. -
Things to do in and out of the camp
find out what soldiers did for fun in and out of their camps.W.H. Ball tells us that many people in the camp go to see a panerama downtown and that it costs 15 cents. Civil war soldiers in camps had alot of time on their hands and many of them played cards or wrote to family during that time. -

This link tells about what currency was used in the North and in the South. W.H. Ball thanks smith for the money and presents he got in the letter smith sent. Getting gifts in camp is a happy occasion in the dull soldiers life. W.H. Ball tells that other soldiers get cake and pie as gifts. -

This link gives some insight on guard duty.W.H. Ball says the night he hsa guard duty is a good night and that the stars were beautifull and plentyfull. At his camp names were picked to have guard duty for the night. -
