Napoleon claims Kingdom of Italy
Napoleon claimed the title of emperor in 1804. In 1805 the Italian Republic became declared as the Kingdom of Italy. Napoleon made his stepson viceroy and Antonio Aldini secretary of state. -
Napoleon was defeated and Italy was divided up into city states
Napoleon resigned to both Italy and French thrones after the Duke of Wellington defeated him. This lead to Italy getting divided up into 7 city states; Piedmont-Savoy, Lombardy, the Republics of Venice and Genoa, Modena, Parma, Tuscany, the Papal states and the Kingdom of the two Sicilies. This eventually leads to the reunification of Italy. -

Reunification of Italy is also known as the Risorgimento. This is the process began when the congress of Vienna was acting as a detonator. This process took about 45 years before Italy was unified as a country again. -
Italian Revolution 1848
This was caused by Italy's want for independence from foreign rule. Northern Italy was controlled by the Austrians and Sicily was controlled by the French. The revolution went on for about two years and it ended up being a failure as Italy did not gain independence. -

In 1871 Rome became part of Italy after the Capture of Rome in 1870. Italy defeated the Papal states that were under the power of Pope Pius IX. Venice became part of Italy in 1866 after the Treaty of Vienna which brought Venice and Vienna into the Kingdom of Italy. Italy was officially unified. -
Crispi Era
The Crispi Era began in 1887 and ended in 1900. This era started when Francesco Crispi became prime minister after Depretis died. Crispi's main achievement as prime minister was extending suffrage to males above 21 that paid 5 lire aluminum taxes. He also created a government for all of Italy and administered laws were created for the first time. -
Italy joins the Allies in World War 1
Italy declared war on Austria-Hungary, and they were on the side as Britain, France and Russia. Italy most likely joined this side because of their hatred for Austria after Austria controlled Northern Italy for so many years. Italy also joined the Allies because they were promised territory if they aided the Allies.
