    Rebellion Occurs
    Nationalist forces in Italy rebelled against their foreign rulers. France and Austria were united to help maintain Italy, they worked together to put down the rebellions.
  • Count Camillo di Cavour

    Count Camillo di Cavour
    Count Camillo di Cavour became prime minister of Sardinia. He was a very Successful minister, and he used national alliances to unite the rest of Italy to Sardinia. Cavour joined Napoleon III in an attack against Austria and Lombardy and Sardinia were united. Later that year, most of the rest of northern Italy joined the union of Italian states.
  • Giuseppe Garibaldi

    Giuseppe Garibaldi
    Guiseppe Garibaldi led an invation of his followers, the Red Shirts into the kingdom of Sicily, to join a popular uprising. Cavour and Garibaldi worked together to liberate Sicily and Naples. Even thought they were different, they found common ground in their desire to unify their people.
  • The New Italian Parlament

    The New Italian Parlament
    The King of Sardinia became the King of Itlay. The new Italian parlament was officialy refered to as "The eighth session of the Sardinian Parliament." The vote was limited to men over the age of 24 who were literate and who owned property.
  • King Of Italy

    King Of Italy
    Sardinian troops were sent in to mantain peace in the papal states. Cavour held an election throughout the states of southern Italy to see if the people were ready to join the northern states and Sardinia as a unified nation. They were officialy united in 1861. Later that year Victor Emmanuel II was crowned King of Italy.
  • France declars war

    France declars war
    France declared war on Prussia in 1870 and the French troops abandoned Rome. Leaving the Pope undefended and the Italian army marched in to complete the unification process. The hostility between the Church and the Italian State grew more intense. Prime minister Benito Mussolini signed an agreement naming the Vatican an independent city-state in 1929.
