The United Nations Partition Plan
The United Nations proposed terminating the Mandate and splitting Palestine into 2 separate states, 1 for the Palestinian Arabs and 1 for the Jews. -
Arab Israeli War
Five Arab nations invaded territory in the former Palestinian mandate but the Israeli’s won. Many Palestinians were forced to leave their homes. The war ended March 10, 1949. The next day, Israel announced their independence. -
Suez Canal Crisis
The Israeli armed forces pushed the Egyptians towards the Suez Canal. The Israelis were joined by French and British forces. In the end, the Egyptians won. It ended November 7, 1956. -
Six Day War
Israel defeated 3 Arab armies, gained territory 4 times its size, and became the greatest military power in the region. It ended June 10, 1967. -
Yom Kippur War
The Israeli’s were attacked on Yom Kippur which is one of the holiest days on the Jewish calendar. Egypt lost the Sinai Peninsula and Gaza Strip, Jordan lost the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Syria lost the Golan Heights to Israel. It ended October 25, 1973. -
The Lebanon War
Israel invaded South Lebanon in the middle of the Lebanese Civil War possibly because they were trying to get revenge of the attempted assassination of the Israeli Ambassador. Israel won. -
Oslo Accords
They were made to try and propel the peace process forward and provide the expansion of of Palestinian self-rule throughout most of the West Bank. They eventually failed. -
Second Lebanon War
The conflict is believed to have killed between 1,191 and 1,300 Lebanese people, and 165 Israelis. It severely damaged Lebanese civil infrastructure, and displaced approximately one million Lebanese and 300,000–500,000 Israelis. -
Israel-Gaza Violence
Israel responds to attacks by armed groups in Gaza with a military campaign by air and land to knock out missile launching sites and attack tunnels. Clashes end in uneasy Egyptian-brokered ceasefire in August. -
Israel Clashes
The Israel Defense Forces conducted some 147 airstrikes in Gaza and Palestinian militants fired approximately 1,100 rockets towards Israel. It ended August 7.
