Israel Now Exists
Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, proclaims the existence of the new Jewish state of Israel to begin at midnight on the 15th of May. -
Attack on Isreal
With the declaration of Israel as a Jewish State and once the British leave Palestine; Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Iraq all attack Israel. -
Armistice
Israel and the Arabs agree to armistice. Israel gained about 50% more land than was allotted in the UN Partition Plan including western Jerusalem. Jordan annexes West Bank and eastern Jerusalem while Egypt occupies Gaza. Approximately 750,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled out of their land. Their total population at the time was 1,200,000 so over half left. -
The Suez Crisis
After several border raids and the closure of the straits of Tiran and the Suez Canal to Israeli shipping, Israel invaded Egypt and the Sinai peninsula and occupied it for a couple of months with the help of the French and the British. This was also an attempt to prevent Egyptians from using the newly acquired Soviet arms in a war. The Canal was once again opened to Israeli shipping. -
The Six Day War
After months of tension, border fights, Egypt's expulsion of the UN buffer force from Sinai to keep the peace, and the closure of the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping, Isreal launched an attack on Egypt. Jordan and Syria joined the war. The war lasted six days and left Israel in control of east Jerusalem as well as all of West Bank, Gaza, Golan Heights, and Sinai. The government also approved of Jewish settlements being set up in those areas. -
Yom Kippur War- October War
Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on the Jewish day of atonement against Israeli forces that occupied Sinai and Golan Heights. Israel suffered many losses, but did hold on strong They were able to push back the Syrians and threatened Damascus. This event changed the mood of the people against the Labour Party. -
Camp David Accords
Egyptian President Anwar El Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem signed the Accords after a 12 day negotiation at Camp David. It was an agreement to have Israel withdraws from Sinai and Egypt to recognize Israel. They also allowed Israel to expand Palestinian self-government in the West Bank and Gaza. -
Israel Invades Lebanon
A massive Israeli invasion of Lebanon occurs to expel Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) leadership after an assassination attempt on the Israeli ambassador to London by a Palestinian militant group. -
The Madrid Conference
The United States and the Soviet Union sponsored the Madrid conference to bring Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Palestinian representatives together for the first time since 1949. They work to settle relations. -
Oslo Declaration of Principles
Israel and PLO agreed to mutual recognition. Rabin and Yasser Arafat signed the Oslo Declaration to plot Palestinian self-government. Some Palestine groups that did not agreed with the Declaration continued to act violently. -
Oslo Interim Agreement
Rabin an dArafat signed the Interim Agreement for the transfer of more power and territory to the Palestinian National Authority. -
Assassination of Yitzhak Rabin
Israeli Prime Minister, Raban, was assassinated by the right-winged Israeli fanatic Yigal Amir in Tel Aviv. Shimon Peres takes over as prime minister. -
Ehud Barak Becomes Prime Minister
Israel elected Labor party leader and former general Ehud Barak as Prime Minister. Barak promised to work towards peace. He pledged to move ahead with talks with the Palestinians and Syria. -
Palestinian Riots
Likud leader, Ariel Sharon, visited the Temple Mount, a holy site to the Jews and to Muslims, which escalated Palestinian protests and brought more violence. -
Operation Defensive Shield
The Israeli army conducts Operation Defensive Shield in the West Bank after a large number of Palestinian suicide attacks on civilians. It was the largest military operation on West Bank since 1967. The operation lasted from March until May 2002. -
The "Quartet's" Proposal
The United States, Russia, The European Union, and the United Nations proposed a way to resolve the Israili-Palestinian conflict by creating an independent Palestinian state. Israel and the Palestinian National Authority both accepted the plan. This required a freeze on West Bank Jewish settlements and an end to attacks on the Israelis. -
Barrier Violates Law
The International Court of Justice ruled that the Israeli security barrier violated international law and had to be torn down. -
The Second Lebanon War
Hezbollah terrorists crossed into the border of Lebanon and attacked an Israeli patrol killing several and capturing 2 soldiers. This leads to the Second Lebanon War. The government faced a lot of criticism for leaving the Hezbollah forces largely intact. -
The Annapolis Conference
The United States holds a peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland. A "two-state solution" is established for the Israelis and Palestinians for future talks. -
Turkish Activists Killed
Nine Turkish pro-Palestinian activists were killed while Israelis boarded ships attempting to break the blockade of Giza. This damaged relationships with Turkey. Israel eventually apologized for the deaths in 2013.
