King's Attention Turned to the Subject of Irish Emigration
The attention of the King's government was turned to the issue of Irish Emigration when it was called to attention that waves of Irish citizens were leaving Britain from the port at Cork and were being given free passage, land and the tools they would need to become prosperous farmers in upper Canada. Although this specific method of emigration was only available to the destitute there was still concern about how the rest of the Irish population would adapt. -

Ships full of Irish Immigrants arrive at Grosse Ile
Grosse Ile was the landing point for thousands of immigrants who arrived in Canada through the port in Quebec. In June of 1847 it is reported that there were ships lined up for days to make their landing. according to records the ships were carrying as many as 14000 Irish immigrants, however because of illness on the ships and poor quarantine systems on the island, 5000 of those immigrants died and were buried on Grosse Ile. -

Organization of Irish Immigration to Manitoba and the North West
A dispatch from the Governor General of Canada to the Privy Council details a plan to relieve some of the pressure on the Population of Ireland by organizing land grants for entire families who wished to emigrate. The plan was devised by the Minister of Agriculture and each family would receive a land grant of 160 acres for the price of 12(?). -

James McCombe comes to Canada
My own grandfather James McCombe came to Canada to attend school in Toronto. Although he arrived only as a student he eventually gained citizenship after he had married my Grandmother who was a resident of Wellington County Ontario. He departed from Belfast on a Cunard Liner and arrived in Quebec like many other immigrants. -
