Ireland History

  • 8000 BCE

    Settlers

Ireland's first settlers are said to have landed somewhere between 8000 and 7000 BC.
  • 403

    St Patrick

St Patrick was kidnapped and taken to Ireland around 403 AD, when he was sixteen years old. He managed to escape, but came back later after hearing the voice of God. That's when he started to preach Christianity to the people who lived there. He still has a lasting impact on the country, having given them the symbol of the three lead clover and having an entire holiday dedicated to him (St Patrick's Day).
  • Oliver Cromwell

Considered one of the most hated men in Irish history, Cromwell thought he was doing the work of God as he slaughtered tons of people. He also burned down homes, uprooted crops, destroyed Catholic Churches, and murdered priests. About one third of Catholics died from either famine, disease, or fighting.
  • The Great Famine

This occurred between 1845 and 1852 when the potato crop failed. Potatoes were their main crop, and when it failed, lots of people went hungry. About one million died, and another million emigrated to other countries. Some of them came to America, seeking refuge, but a lot of businesses refused to hire Irish people.
  • Charles Stuart Parnell

Charles Stuart Parnell (1846-1891), who is considered one of Ireland's greatest politicians, created the Land League. This group of people, including himself, wanted to deal with England (their long term enemy) in a more political way. He was never able to make Ireland run by its own Parliament, but it is said he set the foundation for their big uprising.
  • An Uprising

Padraig Pearse, one of the leaders of this new uprising, read the "Proclamation of the Irish Republic" on the steps of the General Post Office. About 1,200 members were involved in this Uprising. They failed, and the leaders of the uprising were executed by the British.
  • Independence

After lots of rebellions and years of fighting, Ireland finally achieved its independence. There was just one problem: six counties in Northern Ireland were unable to escape from British rule.
  • Irish Civil War

The Irish Civil War began in 1922 and ended in 1923. This whole war was fought over whether or not to accept the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Lots of tensions rose, and soon a war broke out. The pro-Treaty side ended up winning this civil war.
  • Bunreacht na hÉireann (Constitution of Ireland)

After the Constitution of the Irish Free State (1922) failed, this new Constitution of Ireland was adopted. A year later, on June 25, 1938, Dubhglás de Híde was inaugurated as the very first president of Ireland.
  • Northern Ireland Government Fail

In January 2017, the government collapsed. This happened due to disagreements between Sinn Féin and the DUP. There have been attempts to restore a government, but they have all failed. To this day, they remain without a government. They now hold the record for the longest time without a government.
