Inventions That Changed Society

  • Champagne

    Champagne
Champagne was first bottled by French monks in Champagne, France, but was really invented by Dom Pierre Perignon. There's not really much to say except that it's a form of sparkling wine. It changed society because it was a higher class type of alcohol used normally for celebrations or at high class gatherings or parties, instead of beer or hard liquor like whiskey or vodka. They got it in limousines nowadays too, swag. Drink with style.
  • The (Mercury) Thermometer

    The (Mercury) Thermometer
If it wasn't for this thermometer, there would be a lot of things wrong with the world today. Kids would stay sick for longer with fevers and colds and what not because they wouldn't be able to tell their temperature. Foods could be over cooked or under cooked and people could get food poisoning. Now really, who wants food poisoning? Who wants to eat under or over cooked food? I don't know anyone that would.
  • The (Mercury) Thermometer

    The (Mercury) Thermometer
Daniel Gabriel Fahrenheit invented the first mercury thermometer back in 1714. There were two types of temperature on the thermometer, Celsius and Fahrenheit. The Fahrenheit scale was obviously created by this same man. The longer the mercury got in the thermometer, the higher the temperature was, and vice versa. It changed society because it provided a way to test the temperature of anything. What you were cooking, the temperature of liquids, and the temperature of yourself or your child.
  • The Game Of Basketball

    The Game Of Basketball
In 1891, James Naismith invented the game of basketball. At first, a soccer ball was dribbled upand down a court of unspecified length and width. To score, you shot into a peach basket. The hoops and nets weren't added until 1893, but the nets were closed. A decade later open nets were finally added.
  • The Game of Basketball

    The Game of Basketball
Basketball was one of the biggest inventions of this era. It has progressed over the years, getting more advanced and more technological. The use of instant replay, cameras, and jumobotrons are just a few examples. It has become one of the biggest things in today's society, no doubt about it.
  • The Actual Basketball

    The Actual Basketball
G.L. Pierce was granted US patent #1,718,305 for the ball used in the game of basketball. It was an orange color, and with a 29.5 inch circumference of the ball. There was eventually a smaller ball for women's basketball in the future, sized at 28.5 inches. This is what is used in the game of basketball.
  • The Actual Basketball

    The Actual Basketball
This was an invention that changed society because of the fact that the first basketballs used weren't really basketballs. They kind of looked like giant medicine balls. This revolutionized the sport and made it a little easier to play the game. And if this wasn't invented, who knows where basketball would be right now.
  • The Segway Human Transporter

    The Segway Human Transporter
The Segway does exactly what its name suggests, it transports people. The first segway revealed in 2001 traveled at 12 MPH, and did not use brakes. To turn or stop, you would shift your weight on the Segway. For example, shift your weight back to stop, forward to go faster, and left and right to turn.
  • The Segway Human Transporter

    The Segway Human Transporter
Th Segway changed society because it provided another form of transportation, and a much faster form of transportation. Mall cops use them along with regular people. They can be used almost anywhere. I don't see many personally, but I know that it comes in handy for certain people, so it's a pretty cool invention.
