Bessemer Process
Developed by both Henry Bessemer in England and William Kelly in Kentucky but in 1856 Bessemer recieved the first patent for the Bessemer process. This process made it cheaper and easier to remove the impurities from steel. -

Ice Machine
Thaddeus Lowe created the ice machine which meant that ice could become readily available for use. Able to store meat and other perishable foods. -
Typewriter
The Scholes-Glidden typewriter was the first successful version. Sold the rights to the Remington company, who would begin produciton in 1874. -
Paper Bag Machine
Margaret Knight invented the paper bag machine, which allowed paper bags to have a flat bottom (think of paper grocery bags). Up until that point they had not been flat and it was difficult to store items in them. A man named Charles Annan attempted to steal her patent, and said that no woman could create such a machine. Knight took him to court and won, becoming the first women to patent an idea. -

Refrigerated Railroad Car
Gustavus Swift was a wealthy meat packer from Chicago. He commisoned engineer Andrew Chase to design a refrigerated railway car. It allowed Swift to butcher the meat in Chicago and send the edible parts to butchers back east. It made the process cheaper and easier. -

Not the first lightbulb; however it was the first to be a practical lightbulb. -

Created by Thomas A. Edison. It was a machine that was able to record voices and sounds. Would later evolve into a record player,which plays music. -

Mechanical Dishwasher
Josephine Cochrane invented the first practical mechanical dishwasher. She was a wealth woman who was not accustomed to doing the dishes so she created a machine to do it for her. She started the Garis-Cochrane manufacturing company which becomes KitchenAid and then becomes Whirlpool. -
Windshield Wiper
Mary Anderson Invented a manual windshield wiper. It would be operated by the driver of the car. It would not be until 1917 that an automatic windshield wiper was patented.
