The 1956 Vietnam election was to consolidate the 2 powers in both North and South Vietnam and unify the countries. Ngo Dinh Diem saw that he would not win the election so he decided to cancel the election. -
The National Liberation Front is formed.
The National Liberation Front or also known as The Vietcong was a political organization that was located in South Vietnam. They were citizens that used guerrilla warfare on the U.S. troops. -

A Buddhist Vietnamese monk set himself on fire to protest the alleged prosecutions by the South Vietnamese Government. -
The United States withdraws support of Ngo Dinh Diem, leader of South Vietnam.
After stopping the support of Ngo Dinh Diem the South Vietnamese army staged a coup d'etat over Diem and his brother and where eventually executed. The coup of Diem brought political chaos to south Vietnam. -
President Kennedy is assassinated, leading to the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson
While Kennedy was in office signs were pointing to him possibly taking U.S. troops out of Vietnam. LBJ brought us further into conflict with Vietnam. -
President Johnson claims a U.S. ship has been fired upon by the North Vietnamese.
The USS Maddox was fired upon in the Gulf of Ton kin leading to the result of the U.S. being more engaged in the Vietnam war. -
The first combat troops arrive in Vietnam
The first 3,500 U.S. combat troops arrive in Vietnam to defend the U.S. air base in Da Nang. They joined the 23,000 U.S. military advisers in already there. Prsident Truman sent the advisers there in 1950.
