Ho Chi Minh was a Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader. During the Vietnam war he was trying to free his nation from colonial influences. He wanted to beat south Vietnam to reunify his country. He was killed before he ever saw the north beat the south. -
Vietnam declares independence from France, but neither France nor the U.S. recognize Vietnam as a separate nation.
South Vietnam declared independence from France. It took 30 years but North Vietnam would then take over South Vietnam making then a Communist nation. -

The domino theory is simply that nations will continue to fall to communism. The U.S. is worried that Vietnam will fall to communism. -
The National Liberation Front is formed.
The National Liberation Front in Tan Lap village in Tay Ninh was also known as National Front and was created to help liberate the south Vietnamese. -
A South Vietnamese monk sets himself on fire.
The Buddhist monk Thích Quang Duc burned himself alive to fight all forms of oppression. -
The U.S. withdraws support of Ngo Dinh Diem, leader of South Vietnam.
After supporting him for being an anti-communist, they withdrew and this soon after lead to the death of Ngo Dinh Diem. -
President JFK is Assassinated.
After JFK was shot and killed, his replacement was president Lyndon B. Johnson. If JFK was never killed many believe that the war in Vietnam would have been over much sooner, because everyone believed he was going to pull our troops out of the war. -
President Johnson claims a U.S. ship had been fired upon.
President Johnson claimed that the Maddox had been fired upon by north Vietnam. After this president Johnson would try to help any country that was in harms way of communist nations. -
The first combat troops arrive in Vietnam.
On March 8 1965 The U.S. sent their first troops into Vietnam to prevent the spread of communism.
