Intro to Ed school History

  • First Public School

    Horace Mann started the first public school in Massachusetts. Prior to this the only people able to obtain an education through schooling were the wealthy
  • More students= more rooms

    In the 1930's public schools saw an increase in enrollment. Rather than one room where all classes were taught and sometimes had multiple grades. The students started moving to different classrooms for their lessons, and were separated by grade.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    In this ground breaking case the supreme court ruled that is was unconstitutional for children to be segregated based upon race. It was a huge turning point in the civil rights movement.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Act

    This act gave children with disabilities the right to a free public education. This was also when IEP's were first introduced into the school system
  • Department of Education

    Jimmy Carter appointed the first secretary of education and established the Department of Education within the federal government.
  • IDEA

    This implemented a name change to Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). It also focused on a plan for students who were sixteen years of age to have an ITP (individual transition plan) as part of the IEP. These adolescents now had an action plan for how best to prepare them for what they would face in adult life and what career options could be possible for them in terms of additional schooling
  • Universal Preschool

    Georgia becomes the first state to offer parents the option to enroll their four year old children into a universal preschool.
  • No Child Left Behind

    This act was enacted to show the proficiency of school and ensure each student was receive the best education available. Standardized test was now required from all student and if the district as a whole didn’t meet the standards actions were taken to help the students succeed such as tutoring, or summer school. Teachers were also held to a higher standard by being required to have the highest quality certifications available to them.
  • Indiana New Core Standard

    Mike Pence signs legislation that removes the state of Indiana from the common core standards, this allows them to implement their own standard.
  • West Virginia strikes for Equal Pay

    On February 22nd teachers all over the state walk out of the classroom and into the streets to protest their pay and benefits. On March 6th the government granted all teachers a 5% pay increase
