This was Chris McCandless´s home town and where he grew up. His moms name was Billie and his fathers name was Walt. He also had a sister who´s name was Carine. Chris left his family after he graduated college to pursue a life of adventure and not live the typical life that everyone else does. Another reason was to get away from his parents. -
Atlanta, Georgia
Chris´s high school years took place in Virginia, but he went to Atlanta, Georgia to attend college at Emory University. Little did his parents know that the last time they would ever see him would be at his college graduation. He ended donating his $25,000 in savings to the OXFAM foundation. This is a foundation that helps starvation and poverty around the world which is pretty ironic considering he burns his money and dies from starvation. He owned a datsun which he drove west. -
Dallas, Texas
This was his first trip out West. His money ends up getting stolen. His attitude is almost careless. He ends up burning his money anyways. -
Carthage, South Dakota
Chris goes to work for him for several months in a grain elevator. Westerburg said,¨ He was the hardest worker I´ve ever seen. Didn´t matter what it was, he´d do it: hard physical labor , mucking rotten grain and dead rats out of the bottom of the hole - jobs where you´d get so damn dirty you could not even tell what you looked like at the end of the day. And he never quit in the middle of something... He was what you called extremely ethical.He set pretty high standards for himself.¨ -
Detrital Wash, Arizona
Chris abandoned his car. The book says, ¨ The doors had been left unlocked. The floors boards were plastered with mud , apparently with a recent flash flood. When he looked inside , Walsh found a Gianini guitar, a saucepan containing $4.93 in loose change, a football, a garbage bag full of old clothes, a fishing rod and tackle, a new electric razor, a harmonica, a set of jumper cables, twenty-five pounds of rice, and in the glove compartment, the keys to the ignition. ¨ (pg.26) -
Topac, Arizona
When Chris arrives in Topac, Arizona he finds an aluminum canoe. He buys the canoe and and paddles down the Colorado river all the way to mexico. This is ironic considering he is scared of water. ¨ While he was in town, he noticed a secondhand aluminum canoe for sale and on an impulse decided to buy it and paddle down the Colorado River to the Gulf of California, nearly four hundred miles south, across the border with Mexico. ¨ ( pg. 32. ) -
Orick, California
¨...near the town of Orick, a pair of drifters in an old van pulled over to consult their map when they noticed a boy crouching in the bushes off the side of the road. ¨ ( pg. 30 )They asked him if he wanted a ride somewhere. He ended up traveling to Orick Beach where he camped with them for a week. They said they thought the world of him. -
Bullhead, Arizona
Chris temporarily settles down here. He gets a job at Mcdonalds. ¨ Its a good place to spend the winter and i might finally settle down and abandon my tramping life, for good... At the time he wrote these words, he was holding down a full time job , flipping Quarter pounders at Mcdonalds on the main drag, commuting work on a bicycle. ¨ -
Salton city, California
Chris is making his way towards Alaska. On his way there he was picked up by a guy names Ronald Franz. The two of them become very close and before Chris leaves him, he asks if he could adopt him. Chris didn´t fully answer his question but left it with ¨ we can talk about it when I get back ¨ -
Fair banks, Alaska
Another relationship that occurs is Jim Gallien. He was the man he gave Chris a ride to his final destination which was the Stampede trail. This was where McCandless wanted to go all along and he finally made it. -
Teklanika River, Alaska ( the magic bus )
After about two months of being in the place he decided he wanted to go back home but realized he couldn´t due to the flooding river. He did not trust him self swimming across is because he wasnt a good swimmer and was scared of the water. Chris died due to a seed he ate. His body was eventually found in the bus by some moose hunters.
