Chris graduates from Emory University
Chris graduated from Emory University in Atlanta. His mother took pictures of him during his walk to the podium to get his diploma. In the college, Chris had made a name fro himself. He joined the schools newspaper club and was known in the school as an aspiring History and anthropology major. -
Chris abandons his car
Chris McCandless owned an old yellow Datsun which his mother said he loved more than anything. One day during his time camping in the desert, there is a storm and the car's engine gets wet. It doesn't start for Chris, so he leaves it and buries his belongings nearby. -
McCandless leaves Westerberg
During his time in Carthage, McCandless works for Westerberg who he also stays with. Westerberg picked up Chris while he was out hitchhiking and ended up taking him under his wing. Two weeks after McCandless ended up in Carthage, however, Westerberg was arrested for the building and selling of "black boxes." Since there was no work for Chris to do, because Westerberg was in prison, he left and starled on his travels again. -
Chris reaches Morelos Dam
McCandless rented a canoe and crossed the border into Mexico in an attempt to find Morelos Dam. He traveled there through a canal that was almost impossible to navigate. After about a week or two, he finally found it. -
McCandless leaves Las Vegas
Chris went to Las Vegas with no ID and got a job in an Italian Restaurant. He stayed there for about three months before he continues to move on. -
Chris heads to Bullhead City
After leaving Las Vegas, McCandless headed into California but headed east shortly after and found himself in Bullhead City, Arizona. The city was a place that Chris unexpectedly loved, even though it was a total tourist trap filled with cheap strip malls. He got a job at McDonalds flipping burgers. -
McCandless lives in Slabs with Jan Burres and Bob
The Slabs were a sort of post-apocalyptic America where families were living out of nothing but some rusted over cars. McCandless meets a seventeen year old giril named Tracy who falls in love with Chris during his stay. He helped Jan with things like hanging up the laundry. -
McCandless meets Franz
McCandless was on his way back to his camp after getting the things he needed from the town four miles away. He went when he needed to refill his water jug or get more rice. On his way back to his camp, an old man stopped and offered him a ride. Ron Franz was confused when Chris said that he was camped a little ways past "Oh-My-God-Hot-Springs." -
Chris is dropped off by Gallien
Chris gets picked up, while hitchhiking, by a man named Jim Gallien who was driving out to Anchorage to do some work. He drops McCandless off near Stampede Trail, however, he sees that Chris is lacking equipment and is not prepared to 'live off land.' Before dropping McCandless off and leaving him to his quest, Gallien gives him a pair of boots, and the lunch that his wife made him for work. -
Chris McCandless' body is found
Chris was found by a group of moose hunters. An autopsy on his body showed that he didn't have any injuries that caused his death, but that he had died of starvation and his muscles had withered away substantially before his death. -
Franz finds out that McCandless had died
Ron Franz was told by a hiker that Chris froze to death in the wilderness. Ron had been waiting for McCandless to get back, but the news of his death completely shattered him. He withdrew his church membership and returned to drinking.
