  • Treaty of Versailles Signed

    Treaty of Versailles Signed
    The Treaty of Versailles was created to punish Germany for the destruction caused in WWI. In this treaty, Germany lost all territory gained during the war and lost all of their colonies. Armies and Navies were to be limited in size. No air force was allowed. Czechoslovakia and Poland were created. Article 231 was also created to force Germany to take blame for staring the war and finally, the League of Nations was formed.
  • League of Nations Established

    League of Nations Established
    The League of Nations was created with the purpose of negotiating agreements between nations that were in conflict. Forty two nations were members of the League of Nations. The United States refused to join and Germany was banned from joining. After WWII, it later was created into today's United Nations. This league had flaws that resulted in its failure to prevent war, because the League of Nations had no standing army to enforce anyone.

    Benito Mussolini Takes Power in Italy
    In Italy, the government was corrupt and there was a gap in wealth between North and South. In 1925, Benito Mussolini overthrew the government and put in place a dictatorship rule. He was very popular in Italy, and under his power Italy joined Germany in an alliance.

    Japan wanted to create an industrial empire and needed resources and colonies to do this. In 1931, the Japanese wanted to set up a puppet government in Manchuria and staged an incident. They sabotaged a section of railway they owned and blamed it on China, which would allow them to invade China. Japan also left the League of Nations.

    Hitler Appointed Chancellor of Germany
    Hitler campaigned on how to resolve Germany's economic problems and over 30 million Germans voted for him. Hitler vowed to overturn T of V, take back lost territory from the League of Nations, cancel all debts from other nations, get rid of all foreigners, start spending money on public works, and to rearm Germany.

  • Germany's Anschluss with Austria

    Germany's Anschluss with Austria
    Austria is Hitler's homeland, a German speaking country in which most Austrians supported joining Germany. In 1938, a national referendum was held to see if Austrians wanted to join with Germany. The following day Hitler marched into Austria before the votes were even counted.
  • Munich Agreement

    Munich Agreement
    Britain met with Hitler to negotiate a settlement with Germany. Hitler agreed with the conditions of the Munich pact. German forces would occupy Sudetenland and other regions where population is more than 50 percent.But Czechs saw this as a betrayal because Britain was supposed to protect them.

    Germany Occupies Czechoslovakia
    Czechoslovakia was a mostly German speaking region, and was seen by Germans as an easy reason to occupy. It was also thought by the Germans that if they took over Czechoslovakia would support self-determination. And in March of 1931, Czechoslovakia fell and Hitler took the rest of the country.

    On September 1 1931, German soldiers claimed to be attacked by Polish soldiers. which gave Germans a reason to invade Poland Blitzkrieg. On September 3 Britain and France declared war on Germany and on September 10, Canada also declared war on Germany.
