Soviet and German foreign diplomats, Joachim von Ribbentrop and Vyacheslav Molotov, sign the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact, establishing a formal alliance between Germany and the Soviet Union. The terms of the alliance establishes set boundaries for the planned German and Soviet spheres of influence across Eastern Europe.
