1840

· Scottish, English, French and German immigrants arrive in New Zealand

Chinese

1860

· The discovery of gold leads to an influx of Chinese gold-miners to New Zealand, but then heavy taxes were introduced to reduce the number of Chinese coming here.

British

1924

· 2259 British boys and girls arrived to start a better life (after WWI).

White

1926

· White New Zealand League Formed. This group opposed any non-whites immigrating to New Zealand.

Jews - Nazis

1930

· 1000 German Jews who were fleeing the Nazis arrived.

British children

1940

· British child evacuees from World War 2 arrived, as well as Polish refugees.

British immigrants

1947

· New Zealand government paid for British immigrants they wanted to settle in New Zealand.

Dutch

1951

· 19 000 Dutch immigrants arrived.

Pacific Islanders

1960

· Pacific Islanders arrived in New Zealand, many on a 3 month visitors visas. Many overstayed.

Refugee

1970

· Refugees from Uganda, Chile, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam arrived.

Pacific island immigrants

1976

· Dawn raids on Pacific Island immigrants to catch over-stayers.

Iran

1980

· Refugees arrived from Iraq and Iran.

Somali and Bosnian

1990

· Somali and Bosnian refugees arrived in NZ.
