  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    This decision handed down in this court case stated that there would be "separate but equal" schools.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Thirteen parents in Topeka, Kansas filed a class action law suit against the Topeka Board of Education. The Supreme Court ruled that "separate but equal" schools were unconstitutional under the 14th amendment. This court case overturned the ruling in the Plessy v. Ferguson case. The ruling was met with resistance from many government officials in the Deep South. However, schools eventually began desegregating.
  • Little Rock Nine

    Little Rock Nine
    Nine African American students were selected to begin integration of Little Rock Central High School. Supporters of segregation physically blocked the nine students from entering the school on September 4th. In response, President Eisenhower sent Army troops to protect the students and escort them into the building on the 23rd.
