Plessy vs Ferguson was a court case that established the segregation of schools. This was overturned by the supreme court in the Brown vs Board court case. -
Supreme Court ruling
The Supreme Court ruled in 1954 that segregation in schools was unconstitutional. This was known as the Brown vs Board of Education. -
First day of school
The Little Rock nine attended their first day of classes at Central High school (a predominantly white school.) -
Resistance of entry
Governor of Little Rock, Orval Faubus, called in the National Guard to block the entrance of the nine African-American students. -
Protests
The mothers league, a mob of white mothers, gathered outside of the school protesting against the integration of the school systems. Judge Richard Davies assured them that the desegregation would continue to follow through the next day. -

The National Guard was finally removed from blocking the entrance of the nine black students. -
Repercussions of President
President Dwight D. Eisenhower sent in federal troops to escort the nine black students in, where they were able to attend their first full day of school at Central High. -
Central High closed
One year after the integration, Governor Faubus closed down the school to prevent African American attendance. -
Re-opening
The school remained closed for almost a year. The votes opposing the integration of schools was 19,470 to 7,561. Although it was voted against the school reopened in August of 1959.
