5 men, aided by the GOP, broke into the Democratic National Convention. There was $25,000 found in one of the burglar's bank account, which was going to be sent to Nixon's campaign. This committee also found information on an ex- defence analyst. These efforts ended up having Nixon win with 60 percent of the popular vote against anti-Vietnam war campaigner and member of the Democratic party, George McGovern.

Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan
Afghanistan was already in the midst of a harsch civil war- Russian troopers landed in the capital. A few days later they shot and killed the current Prime Minister, who was trying to lead the country away from a religion based political system (Muslim) (he was communist) The Russians replaced him with one of their leaders, but keeping him in control strictly depened on the troops. America put a ban on rice exports to Russia and boycotted the Olympics being held there the next year. -
Nison signs agreement to withdraw from Vietnam
Nixon orders an end to all military action against Vietnam. The last troops left Vietnam on March 29, 1973.
