Instagram Launches
On October 6th, Instagram iOS was released to the app stores. However, the first picture was uploaded on July 16th, 2010. The co-founders are Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. -
1 Million Users
Within two months of launching, Instagram hit 1 million users. The increase in users was faster than most social networking sites, which usually took 5 months or more. Compared to most online social media sites, Instagram was excelling faster than most. -
150 Millionth Photo Upload
In a little under one year, Instagram had its 150 millionth photo uploaded. Comparative to other photo sharing apps, Instagram hit this milestone faster than most. By this time, they had apps on most iPhones, but were not yet launched on Android phones. -
Facebook Buys Instagram
On April 9th, Instagram was sold to Facebook. The company was bought for $1 billion in cash and stock. Though the app was sold, the goal is to allow Instagram to continue to evolve and grow with new features, and not to change drastically. -
Photo Maps
On August 16th, Instagram began photo maps. The set up would allow users to pinpoint their location on a map, as well as see others photos on a similar set up. In 2016, though, Instagram got rid of the feature, stating that not many users knew such a thing existed. -
25 Languages Added
On December 21st, Instagram added 25 different languages, so that many users could use the app in their own language. The update also translates the different languages. Their reasoning is so more cultures are able to use the app easily. -
100 Million Users
On February 26th, Instagram had its 100 millionth user. The amount of users that the site had exceeded original expectations. Despite the fact that it had been set up for around 28 months, Instagram continued to set new records. -
Tag Photos
On May 2nd, Instagram added the ability to tag other users in photos. The update can be used by anyone, but can only be edited by the person who uploaded it. It has been made simple to access, by beginning to type in an individual's user name or name, and then clicking on the one that is wanted. -
Instagram Videos
On June 20th, Instagram added the ability to post videos. Each video can be anywhere from 3- 60 seconds long. Recently, they also added the ability to do a live video, much like Snapchat. -
Instagram Direct
On December 12th, Instagram added the ability to Direct Message anyone with an account. The messaging feature can be accessed from any device or app, such as a computer, tablet, or phone. With Direct Message, you can send images, videos, or just messages to an individual person, or people. -
