Today is Tet, the first day of the lunar calendar. Tet is like the Vietnamese new year where everyone gains 1 year of age no matter their birthday. Ha's mother wants her brother to wake up and bless the home. Ha decideds to do it herself. -

Ha starts growing a Papaya tree and her brother notices everything before her. "i vow to rise first every morning to stare at the dew on the green fruit shaped like a lightbulb" -

Ha's father goes to serve in the army and never returned. -

Wishes
It's Ha's birthday and she wishes for many things. "Wish I could lose my chubby cheeks... I wish father would appear in our doorway and make mother's lips curl upwards" -
Closed too soon.
When Ha is in school a siren goes off and school is now closed for the rest of the year because of the war coming closer. "A sirenscreams over miss Xinh's voice in the middle of a lesson on smiley and bald president ford we all know it's bad news." -
Early Monsoon
The Viatnam war has reached Ha's village of saigon "In the distance bombs explode like thunder, slashes lighten the sky, gunfire falls like rain." -
Wet and Crying
Ha is upset that she has to leave her Papaya tree. She and her siblings share the biggest fruit from teh tree. -
Floating
Ha and her family are now on the navy ship fleeing Vietnam to America. There here bombs over head and everyone is in a panic. Every is ordered to go below the deck. -
Alabama
Ha's family is finally off the ship and they are looking for a sponser. -
School
It's Ha's first day of school and no one looks like her. She gets bullied. He pokes my cheek, howls from everyone, he pokes my chest. I see nothing but squeezed eyes and twisted mouths. No, they're not curious" (page 146). -

Ha is no longer bullied at her school because her brother picks her from school every day now. Not only do they stop making fun of her, they also sit with her at lunch and invite her to parties.
