    The Government wanted 9 out of 10 immigrants to be from Britain. Most of the English immigrants received assisted passage into the country until the scheme was stopped in 1982. This slowed down the immigration and there was an evident decline in the amount of immigrants coming in from Britain.

    The British have been the largest group of people to migrate to Australia since the First Fleet arrived in 1788. The first colony the established was in Sydney after Botany Bay proved to be unsuitable for settlement. During the gold rush of the 1850's many more British immigrants arrived on our shores. By 1854 there were 97,943 English-born people in Australia. After World War 2 British people gained unrestricted access into Australia when people from other countries struggled to gain entry.

    When the Britsh immigrated to Australia they didn't try to understand the Aboriginal way of life and their means of collecting food. The aboriginals were traditionally hunter-gatheres and didn't know of anything other. The methods they used for hunting included spearing to catch animals and to collect plants and grubs they used digging and dilly bag.

    Instead they began clearing land to make way for their own European agriculture. They introduced farming methods such as cattle for milk and meat, poultry for eggs and meat and also the farming and cultivation of several plants and seeds.

    1. People from the pacific rim introduced the following cooking methods and tools to Australian kitchens. Tools and Equipment introduced : • woks used for stir-fry and frying• bamboo skewers used for kebabs and satays. • Bamboo steamers are used for steaming vegetables and other foods. The bamboo is great for steaming because it allows steam to escape and therefore the food doesn't become soggy. • A mortar and pestle is used for grinding spices and other ingredients for curry pastes.

    1. Flavours from the pacific rim became popular in Australia due to the fact that in the 1970's and 1980's, cheap travel to Asian countries enabled many people from younger generations to travel there and taste their interesting foods. This increase in travel and also the increase in the Asian population in Australia pushed for an increase in Asian flavours and ingredients. Another reason why the flavours are popular in Australia is because of their healthiness and their convenience.

    When the Italians migrated to Australia in the 1940's they brought with them many foods. These foods included roma tomatoes, olive oil, pasta, pizza, eggplant, garlic and gnocchi. The use of pots and pans on stoves is a traditional cooking method in Italy. Other cooking methods used include baking, grilling, frying, stewing and boiling. In traditional Italian cookery microwaves were not used, thats changed. We have also adapted the pizza by adding toppings such as pineapple and meats.

Not only have we changed the toppings but we have even come up with an alternative to pizza dough by using bases such as pita bread and turkish bread.

    Dishes like pasta carbonara which contains alot of cream, butter and bacon is not a traditional italian dish it has been adapted from the other cuisines which have been brought to Australia. The Italians didnt use alot of red meat in their cooking that has been influenced by cultures such as the Americans and the English.

    I have a very strong Italian background and this has influenced my food choices. I grew up eating a very meditteranean diet. My mum and nonna don't cook with a lot of butter they usually use olive oil so I'm used to that and I love the taste of it.

    My favourite dish is my nonna's homemade lasagna because it is very traditional and it hasn't been influenced by our culture in any way. She has been making lasagna the same way with the same ingredients her whole life and its delicious.
