    Roughly the whole period of 1820-1840, a crusade for complete abstinece was commenced. And righfully so; due to the vast numbers of immigrants moving into the nation that saw drinking as a way of life coupled with the already popular act of consuming alcohol for almost any occasion created a serious alcoholic problem in society. Therefore, during this time around 5,000 different temperance societies were created with the goal to lead America into comple abstinence from any drink.
