Bessemer Process
The Bessemer Process, invented by Henry Bessemer during the industrial revolution, was a new process to create steel more efficiently. Steel was created in larger quantities for less amount of money. The air was blown through molten metal to combine the oxygen with carbon. Then they are burned out of the molten metal and poured into molds. This process became used worldwide. -
Edwin Drake strikes oil in Pennsylvania
Drake created the world's first working oil well. He used a large iorn pipe to control water and gravel. He placed the pipe in the ground and ran drilling tools through it. The drilling team was able to make progess and separate the water and gravel from the oil. the putrolium business was born and there was a rise in oil industry. -
Transcontinental Railroad
The transcontinental railroad was built from california all the way to the Missouri River. The work was very demanding and sometimes dangerous to build the railroad. Both Central Pacific and Union Pacific helped to complete it along with many chinese workers. This connected the country in a new way allowing a 6 month trip to become a 2 day one. People could travel more, farther and in better conditions now. -
Christopher Sholes
Chrstopher sholes was born in 1819 in Pensilvania. He died in 1890 in Wisconsin. He was the first to create a usful mechanical typwriter to revolutonized ideas of authors. The typewriter combined the ideas of movable type and printing press. Although others had created similar inventions, none were as practcal as Sholes's. The typewriter became very popular after his invention during the Industrial Revolution -
Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone trying to improve the telegraph. His invention improved communications during the Industrial Revolution. He discovered that one could hear sounds through a wire and multiple sounds could be heard. They no longer had to use the Morse Code and could send multiple messeges at a time. This made communications during the Industrial Revolution more effective. -
Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison was born in 1847 and died in 1931. Edison did work on the telegraph as well the first phoneograph in 1877, He created the world's first indecent light bulb in 1879 and most importantly he created a safe system to destribute and generate electricity. Thomas Edison helped bring light to the world during the industrial revolution. -
Interstate Commerce Act
The Interstate Commerce Act oversaw the railway industry. The railway industry was the first industy to be federaly regualted and became a model for other regulated industries during the industrial revolution. Since it was regulated, this clearly challenged the idea of laissez-faire. Congress gained power to engage in buissnesses. -
Pullman Strike
Because of the Industrial Revolution many smaller buisnesses struggled to adapt to a more industrial society. Workers began to ban together to fight for better wages and working conditions. The workers used group action to get what they want. They soon learned that targeting railroads was the best way to boycott. Since the new industry depended on the railways they intentionally sabatoged the railways in order to gain fair rights and wages. -
Lochner v NY Decision
State legislature passed a law limiting bakers hours of work to 10 hours a day and 60 a week. In 1902 Joseph Lochner was fined for disobeying the bakeshop act. He claimed that the act and the government interfered with his right of empoyers and employees. This interfered with the idea of Laissez Faire as well because in the capitalistic market, the government should not interfere. -
Henry Ford
Henry For was and industrialist born in 1863 and died in 1947. He was an Icon of a self made man during the industial revolution. He designed the Model T as a product to apeal to the masss and installed an assembly line into his business. The assembly line made production of product cheaper and faster. He used a five dollar a day pay rate with his workers. This was double the pay that most other workers got but Ford knew that it would also increase the workers loyalty and buissnes in the company
