Indian Removal Timeline

  • 1802

    Word spread that there was gold in the mountains. The compact of 1802 was created by Thomas Jefferson. Georgia gave up the land that is now Alabama to the Mississippi River. In exchange, the government would end all Indian land titles in Georgia. The compact was used to force Indians to relocate.
  • 1805

    There was a land lottery in 1805. The lottery gave away Creek Indians lands. West of the Oconee River was ceded into the state in 1802.
  • 1821

    January 8 was the treaty of Indian Springs. The lower Creek gave land to Georgia in return for cash payments. Georgia receive payment from the federal government for citizens against the Creek. The Creek got $200,000 for their property over 14 years. Chief William Mclntosh was the lower Creek Chief. He supported the U.S. government taking Creek land. The chief signed the treaty to sell if Creek land in his hotel and it was against Creek law to sell land. The Creek wanted to kill the Chief.
  • 1825

    The Second Treaty was also called the treaty of Indian Springs. This one happened on February 12, 1825. The Creek surrendered all land east of the Chattahoochee. They accepted the relocation west of Mississippi. Creek would get $200,000 over 14 years too. Chief Mclntosh got additional money. There was a group of Creeks that went to Washington D.C to protest. Then, Chief Mclntosh died.
