Indians decided to wear only Indian made goods...instead of wearing imported British clothes. the Indians burned western clothes and stopped buying other british products in the markets. British sales dropped drastically. -
The Muslim League is Formed
Led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, this Muslim league was formed because they feared the majority Hindu population of India. they worked for the best interest of Muslims. -
Amritsar Massacre
A British General fires at an innocent crowd, who gathered because they didn't recieve word that they were not to gather. he issued no warning, and fired at men, women, children, and aimed where the crowd was thickest. -
Gandhi begins his nonviolent actions towards the British
He transformed the Indian National Congress and used satyagraha as his method of dealing with the British. satyagraha included non violent actions like fasting, boycotting, and civil disobedience. -
Gandhi protests the British monopoly on salt
the British made a salt tax that also made it illegal to sell or produce salt, making it possible to get salt only from Britain. the Indians would have to buy salt that they couldn't really afford. Gandhi rounded up all the other protestors and went on a 240 mile journey to Dandi to get their own salt. -
the Indians get a limited degree of self-rule
the Government of India act allowed for an elected indian assembly to voice india's needs except for defence and foreign affairs. still, the Indians were not satisfied, as white men still had most of the control. -
the Muslim League calls for a partition
the Muslim League believed that India should be divided into 2 different muslim and hindu countries. they were worried because though there were many Muslims, there were a lot more Hindus. the Muslims feared them. -
India officially parted
Now there were 3 new countries. technically there were two, but pakistan was divided into 2 pieces. most muslims went to live in pakistan, while hindus stayed in india. there was much religios tension though. it caused massive bloodshed. -
